Songfacts®:

  • This was the seventh U.S. single release and fifth elsewhere from Beyoncé's third studio album, I Am… Sasha Fierce. In this song, Beyoncé conveys the fear of love and placing one's heart in the hands of another.
  • The song was penned by the legendary producer and songwriter Babyface, who is best known for his contribution to the creation of New Jack Swing in the late 1980s. Beyoncé and the Norwegian production team Stargate helmed the track.
  • The British director Sophie Muller ("Deja Vu," "Ring The Alarm") did the video. It features Beyoncé as, you guessed it, a broken-hearted girl recalling happier times with her lover. Most of the clip was shot on a beach in Malibu, California.
