Zeitgeist

Album: 13 (2013)

Songfacts®:

  • This is the most mellow track from Black Sabbath's nineteenth album, 13. Critics have compared its processed vocals, spacey motif and Django Reinhardt-influenced soloing to that of "Planet Caravan" from 1970's Paranoid.
  • The word 'Zeitgeist' is derived from the German 'Zeist' meaning "time'' and "Geist" meaning "spirit." It is used to describe the dominant moral or intellectual school of thought characteristic of a culture during a particular period in time. Manic Street Preachers bass guitarist and lyricist Nicky Wire sings of the term on the title track of his 2006 solo album I Killed The Zeitgeist:

    "I killed the zeitgeist
    Ground it all to dust
    Left myself alone
    Digging deeper holes."
