Songfacts®:

  • This Hillary Lindsey, David Garcia, and Josh Miller-penned soulful country track finds Chris Lane and his duet partner Tori Kelly singing about bringing the perfect girl home to meet the family. Lane told ABC Radio that when he was considering his choices for a duet partner on the tune, he had no idea that Tori Kelly would even be an option.

"I recorded this song, 'Take Back Home Girl.' And my record label asked me, 'Hey, who would be a dream collaboration for you?' And I said, 'Tori Kelly,' not knowing that she would do it. But they reached out to her, she loved the song, she decided she wanted to be a part of it of it. And I'm one lucky guy."
  • Hillary Lindsey is one of Josh Miller's favorite songwriters. When music publisher Nate Lowery organized a writing session with her and Chris DeStefano, the Nashville newcomer wanted to be prepared, so he arrived armed with some ideas. One was "Grave" and the other was "Take Back Home Girl." The trio went along with "Grave" which ended up being recorded by Thomas Rhett for his Life Changes album.

A fortnight later, Miller had another writing session lined up with Lindsey and this time David Garcia. Lindsey remembered the title "Take Back Home Girl," as Miller had mentioned he was actually taking his girlfriend back home for the first time, so that's why he had that song name. She asked him if he'd written "Take Back Home Girl" yet and he replied that he hadn't. Miller recalled to Songwriter Universe how Lindsay then picked up a guitar and "closed her eyes" and kickstarted a vibe "just playing some stuff."

The other two thought it sounded cool, so Garcia started creating and building the track as Miller and Lindsey tapped into Miller's story about him taking his girlfriend home.

Chris Lane's manager Seth England got to hear the demo and the rest was history.
