Songfacts®:

  • Written and sung by CCR bass player Stu Cook, this song was based on a job drummer Doug Clifford held during CCR's Golliwog (their previous moniker) days. Clifford recalled in Bad Moon Rising: The Unofficial History of Creedence Clearwater Revival: "I was a college student, and I was hard up to get the job. I was going to sell those pots and pans. I went through the training school - easy money in your spare time, right? But when the guys said, 'Here's the way you trick them into signing and they're hooked,' I just said, f--k you and good-by."
