Songfacts®:

  • This moving, grief-wracked ballad about a child never born was sparked by the birth of twins to Chris Daughtry. At one point during the writing session, the frontman had to walk out to collect himself. "The song is about realizing that today could have been the day that someone would be blowing out the candles," he said. "It just hit me pretty hard. I remember playing the demo for my brother and I turned around and he was bawling. I didn't realize that my brother's wife had suffered a miscarriage years before. It was a pretty emotional moment."
  • Chris Daughtry wrote the song with San Francisco songwriter Michael Busbee, whose other credits include Timbaland featuring Katy Perry's "If We Ever Meet Again," Rascal Flatts' "Summer Nights" and Alexandra Burke's UK chart-topper "Bad Boys."
  • Chris Daughtry donated all the sales of the song to the families of the Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting victims. The proceeds went towards the Connecticut School Shooting Victims Fund, which was established by fellow pop-rockers OneRepublic. Daughtry explained in a video clip, the track was "originally was written about someone losing a child before he or she is born, and we've gotten so many amazing comments from people from everywhere about how it's helped them through similar situations. And I just felt very strongly that this song could be used to help benefit the families."

  • Katrina Hodorowski from Portage, In, UsaI had two miscarriages (the first one at 19 and the second one at 20) and they needed me up pretty badly. This song makes me cry so hard but it’s helped me through the grief of losing both babies. And i thank Chris Daughtry and his fellow band mates for writing this song.
  • Katie from ConnecticutMy son was stillborn 12/6/23 at 27 weeks gestational. People in a group I joined on Facebook mentioned this song. I miss you so much, Silas. Forever my firstborn and son. Forever loved.
  • Leann Bennett from ArkansasI lost my only child (daughter) at 17, just 3 months shy of 18. I know this song is about the unborn, but this song allows me to get my anger out. Her life was just beginning (going into adulthood). She had SO much going for her, but she was trying to decide which avenue she wanted to take before starting her college years. I can’t help but ask myself, who would you be? Now, 15 years later, what would you look like? This song is so very well written. It reaches a so many different people on different stages of grief of losing a child. (Or possibly someone else). THANK YOU Chris Daughtery for your amazing talent. Huge “atta boys” to you!
  • Pam KreutzbergMy daughter passed away at 9 months old and this song hits home for me. I found it on her 1st birthday when I was going to visit her, and I play it every time I come see her. She's definitely Gone Too Soon.
