Songfacts®:

  • One of the earliest Dave Matthews Band songs, "One Sweet World" is about celebrating your life. Live life happy, fun and free, and appreciate that life is a miracle - after all, it hasn't been discovered anywhere outside of Earth, our sweet world.
  • In 2002, Ben and Jerry's created a Dave Matthews Band-inspired ice cream called "One Sweet Whirled" as a tribute to this song. It's a combination of coffee ice cream, caramel, and marshmallow swirls. Ben and Jerry's and Dave Matthews Band both support socially responsible causes, and some proceeds from "One Sweet Whirled" go to the organization Save Our Environment.

In 2007, the company launched another DMB-inspired flavor called "Dave Matthews Band's Magic Brownies," a combination of black raspberry ice cream and fudge brownies.
  • Jerry Garcia (Cherry Garcia) and Phish (Phish Food) were the only other musicians to have flavors of Ben and Jerry's named after them before Dave Matthews Band. They later added Willie Nelson's Country Peach Cobbler and Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road.
  • "One Sweet World" was one of the band's live favorites in their early years and popped up in their setlists from time to time throughout their run. The studio version can be found on Remember Two Things, their debut album. They released the album on their own label in 1993 even though they had already been signed to a major label, RCA. This gave them the experience of putting out an album independently and dispelled any thoughts that they were a record company contrivance. The band had pretty big following on the East Coast but their reach didn't extend far beyond that until they issued their first major-label album, Under The Table And Dreaming, in 1994 and saturated the airwaves with songs like "What Would You Say" and "Ants Marching."

  • Erik from Groton, CtI look at this song as a man remembering the happiness of his childhood, and reflecting on how he has grown up. He mentions moments in his life when a child becomes more independent, but still longs for their parent's love (learning to swim, climbing a little too high in a tree or on a playground, learning to run faster, etc.). I think many adults have moments when they wish they could magically travel back to those earlier years. Part of the joy of being a parent is getting to watch your child experience those same moments themselves.
  • Jeremy from Clay, Nyi like it with dave and tim playing it but i also thik that leroi makes the song when the full band plays it
  • Ben from Harpers Ferry, WvThis is probably one of the best DMB songs. A celebration of life and being alive, and realizing that it takes work to preserve it.
  • Tom from St. Louis, MoThis song is great on the live versions. The lyrics are very inspiring and make you appreciate life. The instrumentals are just incredible!
  • Zach from Horn Lake, MsA song I didn't hear for a long time after I became a DMB fan, this one makes me feel safe and cozy. It is really good on the Dave & Tim album.
  • Dan from Port Jervis, NyI like this song much better when Dave and Tim Reynolds play it acoustically, if that's a word.
  • Roxie55x from West Trenton, NjThis song celebrates life on this planet. It also reminds us of how beautiful, yet fragile, life is so enjoy every minute of it-- "Take all that we can get/ When it's done / Nobody left to bury / Nobody left to dig the holes / And here we will rest safely."
I love this quote too--"Lay down in the mother's arms/ For here we can rest safely."-- It reminds me of turning back to my parents when things turn out wrong in my life.

  • Emily from Houston, TxThat ice cream rocks da house- listen to the song and eat it
