Songfacts®:

  • "You Look Like You Love Me" is a duet between Ella Langley and Riley Green. Langley was the support act on Green's February-June 2024 Ain't My Last Rodeo Tour.
  • The song unfolds as a playful duet, with Langley taking the lead as the woman initiating a flirtatious encounter with a man she sees at a bar. Green then counters with the perspective of the man being approached, creating a fun back-and-forth dynamic. Together, their voices harmonize to form a country anthem celebrating playful flirting.
  • Ella Langley initially wrote the song with Aaron Raitiere, who co-wrote three tracks for the 2018 A Star Is Born soundtrack, including Lady Gaga's "I'll Never Love Again."

It was inspired by a conversation they had together. "His ideas are nuts and I love writing with him," Langley told Billboard. "We were in a write and he was like, 'So how's your relationship life going?' and I said, 'Honestly, I'm at the point where if they look like they love me, I just got to get out of there.' And he was like, 'That's a great song title.'"

Six months later, they had another writing session. "I wanted a funny song that I could play around a bonfire," she said. "We literally just hit record and wrote probably 16 verses and then picked our favorite ones and put it together."

Later, Green joined the songwriting process, adding the second verse.
  • Will Bundy produced the track. Bundy was the man behind the boards on Langley's 2023 debut EP, Excuse The Mess.
  • In May 2024, Ella Langley casually posted a clip on TikTok where she sang the verse and hook of "You Look Like You Love Me" solo. Much to her delight, the clip started trending. Fast forward to June 1, 2024, and Langley found herself onstage in Minneapolis, wrapping up a tour with Riley Green. In a spur-of-the-moment decision, they decided to perform the song together.

"We had no idea we were going to do the song that night onstage, but we did," Langley recounted to Billboard. "He's from Alabama too, and I remember a long time ago playing for a line of people waiting to get into a Riley Green show. I didn't have a ticket, I just watched his show through the gate. So getting on his tour was good. I really just sent it to him so we could sing it together on tour. We had been doing another song together, but then we just ripped into this song and it's been a whirlwind ever since."

The following month, a 30-second video surfaced on TikTok capturing Langley and Green during a soundcheck at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Their voices intertwined perfectly around the song's amorous verses, and the internet took notice. The video went increasingly viral as users uploaded videos featuring all forms of love, especially photo collages of couples on their wedding day. The song debuted at #53 on the Hot 100 chart dated July 6, 2024, following its release two weeks earlier.
  • Directed by Langley with Wales Toney and John Park, the video transports us to a classic Western saloon, where the featured entertainer Langley catches the eye of rugged cowboy Green. The two dance until the local sheriff - played by Jamey Johnson - barges in, brandishing a "Wanted" poster with Green's face on it. Turns out our seemingly straightforward cowboy is actually an outlaw on the lam.

Green's dog, Carl, cameos in the clip.
  • Green initially thought "You Look Like You Love Me" was a cool song with a refreshing nod to traditional country music, thanks to its conversational verses. However, he never anticipated it would become the breakout hit it did.

"Both of us being from Alabama and growing up in similar areas, we have the same kind of twang and our voices just kind of mesh well together,"he told Billboard. "I've been a fan of hers for a long time, so it's been awesome seeing her success with this."
  • A viral sensation, "You Look Like You Love Me," catapulted Green to TikTok fame, expanding his fanbase to include a younger demographic.
  • "You Look Like You Love Me" won Single of the Year at the 2025 ACM Awards. It also won Music Event of the Year and Visual Media of the Year at the same ceremony.

"I grew up on classic country, and there's a lot of talking in it. Conway Twitty. Johnny Lee. David Alan Coe," Langley said at the podium. "This song really changed it for me as a songwriter. It taught me to just not care so much and write what you love and write what feels good."
  • "You Look Like You Love Me" was a big winner at the CMA Awards in 2025, taking Single Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Music Video Of The Year. Green and Langley both performed at the ceremony, but separately: he sang "Worst Way" and she did "Choosin' Texas."
