Songfacts®:

  • "Killer" is a devastating track where FKA Twigs fears her lover will ultimately be the death of her. She senses the demise of promises, dreams and the future that was once promised, but doesn't want to call it a day. Instead, Twigs continues the relationship because she still wants to believe in her man.
  • It's dangerous to be a woman in love
I'm walkin' quicker, but you're pickin' up
Feel like I'm navigatin' muddy waters
    Heal us

While working in the studio with Jimmy Napes, Jonny Coffer and Amanda Ghost, the line, "It's dangerous to be a woman in love" came into Twigs' head. It got them thinking about how, when embarking on a relationship, you don't know whether it's going to be the best experience of your life or leave you completely heartbroken. "I think for me this song is about the risks that you take for love," Twigs told BBC Radio 1's Jack Saunders. "And I think like glass can be one of the most beautiful but also one of the most painful experiences. So it's about when you're entering into those feelings with somebody and the risks that you take and how it can just completely break your heart. And I guess like succumbing to that sometimes and the fear of it."
  • Twigs wrote "Killer" on the piano in just one day. "It came together in such a pure way," she told Apple Music. "It really taught me to sometimes keep things pure and naive and simple."
  • The song is Twigs' first collaboration with Sam Smith's songwriting partner Jimmy Napes. The singer previously collaborated with producer Jonny Coffer and songwriter Amanda Ghost on the Caprisongs track "Papi Bones."
  • Twigs and Coffer co-produced the song with frequent Rosalia collaborator El Guincho. Spanish musician El Guinch co-produced 12 tracks on Twigs' Caprisongs album.
  • Twigs first previewed "Killer" on her TikTok on June 4, 2022. She debuted the song a week earlier during her performance for NPR's Tiny Desk concert series recorded at the St. Matthias Church in London.
  • French music video director Yoann Lemoine shot the visual on Praia de Almagreira beach in Portugal. The clip co-stars Spanish actor Aron Piper, best known for playing Ander Muñoz in the Netflix teen drama Elite.
  • This is Twigs' first visual collaboration with Lemoine, who has also filmed videos for Katy Perry ("Teenage Dream"), Taylor Swift ("Back To December"), Lana Del Rey ("Born To Die"), and Harry Styles ("Sign of the Times"). "Twigs approached me with a beautiful treatment for 'Killer' that she had written about her personal story," Lemoine explained. "It felt empowering and vulnerable at the same time."

Lemoine readily agreed to direct the clip. He saw it as the perfect opportunity to portray Twigs in a raw and intimate way that we haven't seen before. "The video is about the poison and the fuel that personal trauma is in art," he said. "How our experience forces us to create and how sometimes it is only inhibition and violence."
