Songfacts®:

  • "In Love With A Girl" was the lead single from Gavin DeGraw's second album, Gavin DeGraw. Most artists, if they release a self-titled album, make it their debut, but DeGraw bucked that trend. His debut album, Chariot, was released in 2003 and, after the song "I Don't Want To Be" became the theme to the TV series One Tree Hill, it gradually found a following. He did a lot of promotion and got busy with other ventures, like a bar he opened in New York City with his brother Joey called The National Underground. By the time his second album came out in 2008, he had lost a lot of momentum and the musical landscape had changed. "In Love With A Girl" made a respectable chart showing at #24, but no other songs on the album charted.
  • Actress Kristin Cavallari stars as DeGraw's love interest in the music video. The Laguna Beach star plays a Walmart employee who plays around with DeGraw after work.
  • "In Love With A Girl" is a song about the security of being in a relationship. Gavin DeGraw explained: "It's about being with someone who you feel confident in, who feels confident in you, who knows you really well and loves you for what you are."
  • Much of the Gavin DeGraw album is about the ups and downs of being in love, but DeGraw denied the songs were about one particular girl. He said: "Just to set the record straight, this album isn't about one girl. It's about different relationships, my mindset in those relationships and just a poetic reflection of the stuff I've gone through."
