Songfacts®:

  • "I Can Tell" is a soul-drenched meditation on the human capacity to want what isn't technically available. Giveon is caught in that strange twilight where conversation ends but body language insists otherwise.
  • Despite the swagger in the lyrics ("If you let me, I'ma take his place") Giveon told Genius he's actually rather good with rejection. He doesn't plot, scheme, or sneak. Instead, he goes for cheerful bluntness: "Hey, I like this. I like you. What are we doing?"

If the answer's no, that's fine. If it's yes, even better.
  • Giveon said the song's confidence comes from history repeating itself; time and again he's noticed the same subtle signs when someone's heart isn't fully in their relationship.
  • "I Can Tell" reflects Giveon's restless curiosity: when he doesn't have clarity about someone's feelings, he'll ruminate on it endlessly until he finds an answer, fueling the urgency in the second verse.
  • Working in a relaxed, jam-session style, Giveon co-wrote the smooth ballad with James Essien, Rupert Thomas Jr., Matthew Burnett, Jeff "Gitty" Gitelman, Jahaan Sweet, Carlos Muñoz and Kenny Siala. Giveon said the song came together very naturally, making it one of his most relaxed songwriting experiences.
  • The song's production was handled by Sevn Thomas, Matthew Burnett, Jeff "Gitty" Gitelman, Jahaan Sweet, Los Hendrix, Kenny Siala, Cory Henry and Brian Cruz.
  • The video, directed by Sahra Gadat, places Giveon opposite Michelle Helena Janssen in a series of moody, intimate vignettes echoing the track's simmering undertone: a man convinced he can love better than the current incumbent, even if he knows it may never happen.
