Songfacts®:

  • Here, Headie One links up with Drake to exchange verses over UK drill producer M1 On The Beat's eerie instrumentation. The song is a freestyle during which the two rappers touch on many of their familiar topics, including women, their successful careers, and their wealth.
  • Drake kicks things off with a hard-hitting verse where he threatens his unnamed opps.

Woi, four in the cliz and one in the headie
Hand no shake, man, hold that steady

"One in the headie" is a reference to having a bullet ready to fire in a gun's chamber. The mention of "one" and "headie" doubles as a reference to Headie One.

Drake said in a press release: "I had to go hard, especially on a track with one of the best drill artists in the world. Scratch that - the best drill artist in the world."
  • Headie's verse makes several British references (Bentley cars, the town of Epsom) as well as to international footballers David Trezeguet and Mario Balotelli.
  • Drake has publicly shown his support for UK drill in the past on socials. He previously adopted a UK drill-inspired flow on the freestyles "Behind Barz" and "War," and also linked up with Brooklyn-based drill rappers Fivio Foreign and Sosa Geek on "Demons."
  • Drake's longtime photographer Theo Skudra directed the video alongside Nathan James Tettey, who's also worked with Dave ("Black") and Stormzy ("Own It").
  • After Drake hit Headie One up about doing a collaboration, the North London rapper waited until the Toronto MC's people sent over M1 On The Beat's instrumentation. He recalled to Apple Music: "We were laughing, like, 'This is too easy!' It was a bit of genius from him to send that too, because it's perfect production for me and I hadn't really got on something like that in a while. It was love from Drake and I'm happy that it came out so natural and unforced."
  • Some people thought Drake was offbeat on his verse but Headie understood what he was doing. He said: "If you wanna come off beat for four bars and then land on beat for the fifth, then that's what you wanna do! As artists we should be allowed to do what we want."
  • "Only You Freestyle" is the lead single from Headie One's Edna album; he titled it after his late mother who passed away when he was 3.

Headie One's reflective record embraces various themes including growing up without the presence of his mom, the importance of his faith in God, and his relationship with his hometown Tottenham. "She was a really positive person," he told Apple Music of Edna Duah. "I think that's gotta be my strongest memory of her."
  • Edna made history as the first drill album to top the UK albums chart.
