Songfacts®:

  • Although Horatio Nicholls was not a performer, he appeared in a cameo filmed by British Pathe to promote this song, accompanying Judy Shirley on piano. According to the man himself: "...I was in the ballroom last night and I noticed this sad young lady sitting in the corner watching her partner dance with somebody else. He consoled her by saying 'Don't worry darling, I'm saving the last waltz for you'".
As the lyrics were written by his regular collaborator J.G. Gilbert, the story is probably apocryphal, but in any case this is a fairly run of the mill number, not untypical for him. Having said that, many songs have since been written on the theme of the last dance, so the pair may have started something.
  • The sheet music was published by Lawrence Wright of London in 1938; Lawrence Wright being the composer's real name! >>
