Songfacts®:

  • This is the title track of Jason DeRulo's third album. "The reason why I chose the title 'Tattoos' is because tattoos are permanent, and they are a piece of art," Derulo explained to Billboard magazine. "We put them on our bodies, and they remain on our bodies for the rest of our lives. And that's what this album is - every single song is a part of my life that will never go away."
  • Derulo told Radio.com that he didn't want to hide any aspect of his life on the album and in this song he talks about some dark moments, which he compares to tattoos. He explained that every relationship goes through its ups and downs, and he wanted to write about the bad as well as the good.
