Songfacts®:

  • "Already There" deals with the concept of two lovers, where one has already fallen in love and waits for the other to catch up. Now, Joan Armatrading's romantic interest has told her for the first time he loves her, and she feels like she's floating on air.

"All I was thinking about was love at first sight," Armatrading told Mojo magazine. "Somebody's saying, 'When I saw you for the first time... I've lost count of the number of people who've said, 'You wrote that song for me.'"
  • Music video director David Lopez-Edwards shot the video at the Rivoli Ballroom in London. "Joan is a great storyteller through her music, and when I first heard the track, I had this image of her sat in an old armchair telling the beautiful love story that is Already There," he said.

"I really wanted to be able to convey the emotion of the song in the video," Lopez-Edwards added. "I thought the best way of achieving that was to tell the story was through contemporary dance and have a dance couple interpret Joan's lyrics, and tell what is essentially a very emotional narrative through their movement, expression and interaction. We were all blown away by the routine our choreographer Ainsley created, and it was truly magical seeing it brought to life by our two incredible dancers Zhané and Jared."

Lopez-Edwards' resumé also includes videos for Kyle Minogue ("Every Day's Like Christmas"), Natalie Imbruglia ("Invisible Things") and Gabrielle ("Can't Hurry Love").
  • "Already There" is the lead single from Armatrading's 20th studio album, Consequences. She produced it herself.
  • Consequences shot straight to the #10 position in the UK charts in its first week of release. It was Armatrading's first UK Top 10 album containing new material since her 1983 set, The Key, peaked at #8 in 1983.
