Songfacts®:

  • Kehlani started dating West Coast rapper YG in September 2019. They split later in the year, but by early 2020 the Cali pair seemed to have worked things out. The reconciliation appeared confirmed with the release of their joint Valentine's Day single, "Konlusions," but just a few days later, Kehlani announced their breakup to fans with the release of the somber "Valentine's Day (Shameful)."
  • Without addressing YG by name, Kehlani details the moment she found out he'd been unfaithful.

Wish I didn't check your text when you was drunk 'sleep
I've seen everything that I ain't wanna see

Rumors about YG's infidelity had been around for a while. In 2019, the press spotted the rapper apparently kissing another woman while leaving a Los Angeles nightclub on Halloween night. On "You Know Wassup" she addressed allegations about her lover's unfaithfulness and the pain it brought her.
  • The rest of the song finds Kehlani expressing:

Anger, as she accuses YG of using her "for status and the fame and recognition."

Heartbreak, as she describes herself as "broken, expected to carry the weight."

Pride, as during their romance her "heart was so pure." She helped YG fight his crippling addictions, only to find herself "played in the end."
