Songfacts®:

  • On September 15th, 2022, Lil Nas announced a partnership with the multiplayer battle arena game League of Legends to promote the game's 2022 World Championship. This song is the official global anthem for the tournament, held from September 29 - November 5, 2022. League of Legends developer Riot Games also named Lil Nas the new President of the competitive online game.
  • Lil Nas' role is to add a musical touch to the competitive gaming experience. "I felt like it was time for me to try something new," the rapper said. "I've left my mark on pop culture in so many ways, and now it's time to take on the world of gaming. I will be the greatest President, of League of Legends, of all time. Also I'm going to make the best Worlds anthem of all time and put on the biggest, coolest, sexiest Worlds in the history of all Worlds!"
  • "Star Walkin'" is a buoyant, uplifting song in which Lil Nas X flexes on his detractors, letting them know he's already proved them wrong. Now he's racing to the moonlight and heading to the stars.

The verses came quickly, but Lil Nas struggled with the chorus. "It took, no joke, 30 different, 40 different, 50, I don't know how many different hooks, to get the hook to a place where I'm, 'Okay, this is something I like," he told Apple Music. "That's cool.'"
  • Lil Nas X wrote "Star Walkin'" with Georgia songwriter Ink and producers Cirkut and Omer Fedi.

Atia "Ink" Boggs co-wrote three tracks on Beyoncé's Renaissance album and Chris Brown's collaboration with Justin Bieber, "Don't Check On Me."

Los Angeles producer Omer Fedi previously contributed to seven tracks on Lil Nas X' Montero album, including the title song and "Thats What I Want." Among his other credits are 24kGoldn's "Mood" and The Kid Laroi's "Without You" and "Stay."

Canadian producer Cirkut is known for working with Katy Perry ("Roar"), Miley Cyrus ("Wrecking Ball"), The Weeknd ("Starboy"), and Ava Max ("Sweet But Psycho").
  • Lil Nas X first teased "Star Walkin'" through social media back in May 2022. He debuted the full song as an encore on his first show of his Long Live Montero tour in Detroit on September 6, 2022. Lil Nas released it as a single on September 22, 2022.
  • The anime-inspired video shows League of Legends pros on their way to attend the championship in San Francisco, the destination city for the World Final on November 5.
