Songfacts®:

  • This is the theme song for the 2009 movie Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Co-frontman Mike Shinoda told Billboard magazine that as a group of confirmed fans of the toy and cartoon franchise, Linkin Park "created a song that we felt fit the spirit of the movie and the characters and also obviously stayed true to the spirit of the band."
  • Film composer Hans Zimmer adapted this song into instrumental segments for the film score and Linkin Park worked with Zimmer and Steve Jablonsky on other pieces for the movie.
  • This song was not Linkin Park's first contribution to the Transformers film franchise. "What I've Done" was included on the original Transformers movie's soundtrack and also was included on its trailer.
  • The 33 position drop from 6-39 for this song on the chart dated June 13, 2009 set the mark for the biggest descent within the top 40 in the history of the Billboard Hot 100. The previous largest fall was back in 1966 when "They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha-haaa" by Napoleon XIV descended 32 places from 5-37.
  • This was Linkin Park's eighth #1 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart.

  • Joe from Lincoln, NeIf you listen, there is a similarity between New Divide and What I've Done. This was Purposeful since they are both songs for the Transformer movies. They also sound cool over each other if you take out vocals.
