Songfacts®:

  • Liz Phair takes on the persona of the girl who dumped Mick Jagger and left him distraught in the Rolling Stones' 1972 song "Turd On The Run." In her song, we learn that she's a vixen that leaves a trail of broken hearts in her wake. "I love it because I'm basically talking about being able to get away with murder, turning the tables on the stuff that you've seen that I've been upset about before," she explained to Rolling Stone in 2018. "Earlier in the record, you can tell it's hard to be a woman in a man's world, and then you get to this song, and you see how the knife cuts both ways. You can manipulate the system to your advantage, as well, which women, we do both. We try to live a certain way, but when it gets really hard we sometimes flip the tables. We use it to our advantage, and then we go back to trying to make the world the way it ought to be."
  • "What I love about this song that very few people comment on is the obnoxious sort of stand-up comic in the back that I'm being," Phair noted. "I'm being second vocal where I'm imitating the narrator, which is also me. I'm dragging my own vocal."
  • This was used in the 1994 movie Amateur, starring Isabelle Huppert and Martin Donovan.
