Falling Apart

Album: Some Mad Hope (2007)

Songfacts®:

  • Matt Nathanson really did feel like he was falling apart when he wrote this song, which finds him wondering if his marriage was worth saving (it was). The Some Mad Hope album keeps this theme running throughout. "The record is modeled like a little play," Nathanson explained. "It starts with 'Car Crash' where everything is exciting and I'm ready to feel alive. 'Come On Get Higher' is sexy and heartbreak. It leads you through a new relationship and the destruction of another relationship. Then there's a turn where the relationship being destroyed ends up being saved. 'Falling Apart' is the lynchpin moment where I don't know what's going on. It's like, I'm falling apart. You're disappearing and she's disappearing and I'm disappearing and it's a mess. It's my favorite song on the record."
  • "Falling Apart" was the fourth and final single from Nathanson's Some Mad Hope album, the one that put him on the map. Unusually, it came after he moved from a major label (Universal) to an independent (Vanguard). Without the pressure to write a hit, Nathanson was able to focus on his expression, which connected with listeners. His main collaborator on the album was producer Mark Weinberg, who has writing credits on all the tracks.
  • The music video, directed by Samantha Grant, shows Nathanson struggling to reconcile two love interests, one of whom appears to be Rosie O'Laskey, who starred in the "Come On Get Higher" video.
