Songfacts®:

  • The Boatman's Call is widely feted as one of rock's great breakup albums, and is said to be inspired Nick Cave's brief relationship and subsequent split with singer PJ Harvey, his "West Country Girl." Cave explained to The Sun:

"That record was about circumstances that happened to me at the time, which I cannibalized... an infamous love affair of a few months that I turned into a great heartbreak of the century."
