Songfacts®:

  • The music video finds the band performing this song in a Chevrolet Sonic in an unusual manner. As the car speeds along a 3.2 kilometer desert track, outside of Los Angeles, retractable pneumatic arms attached to the Sonic bash out the tune by striking a series of over 1,100 homemade instruments such as chimes and metal bowls plus 55 upturned pianos and countless guitars. It took four months of preparation and four days of shooting and recording to film the clip and singer Damian Kulash, who drives the car, took stunt-driving lessons rather than using a stand-in. The clip was debuted in a Chevy commercial broadcast during Super Bowl XLVI.
  • Bassist-vocalist Tim Nordwind told Jam! Music in a March 2015 interview this was the hardest video to film to date. He explained: "We were driving through a musical obstacle course, through two and a half miles of desert in a car with robotic arms. That was probably the most challenging for several reasons. For one, it's just a hard thing to do, you know, to figure out what instruments you can build that you can tune, that will stay in tune in an outdoor environment. And then shooting outdoors presents all sorts of difficulties."

  • Sydney from Dallas, TxThe guitar solo is done at 55 mph. Pretty impressive. Also, all of the piano's had to be tuned to play the same note wherever they were struck. All of the guitars and amps were donated specifically for this purpose. And about half of the strings broke after they were played.
