Songfacts®:

  • PawnShop Kings songs are collaboratively written by the pair of brothers that make up the band, Joel and Scott Owen. Joel explained in our interview that they have fairly different creative instincts, which produces balanced, fine-tuned song. "Don't Say That" was written primarily by Scott.
  • The lyrics examine the hypocrisy of citing divine right as an excuse for reprehensible deeds. "Some of the ways faith is misused are hard for me to reconcile," explained Scott. "So I just sat on the floor and wrote the whole song."
  • This song is an example of the brothers' unique way of integrating their faith into their lyrics. Rather than try to overtly preach a religious message, they prefer to take a more "honest" approach - examining the more complex aspects of belief and how it affects everyday life.
  • The song released on their 2010 PawnShop Kings EP. The album was the band's second official release, following their debut, 2007's Locksley, and saw a continuation of the band's unique fusion of musical aesthetics and introspective lyrics.
