Post Malone was born Austin Richard Post in Syracuse, New York. When he was 9 years old, he and his family moved to Grapevine, Texas after his father, Richard Post, became the manager of concessions for the Dallas Cowboys. Post considers himself a Texan and is a huge Cowboys fan.
Malone is the embodiment of post-genre music. He grew up listening to hip-hop, metal and classic rock, but makes whatever kind of music moves him, regardless of classification.
He attended Grapevine High School in the Dallas suburb of Grapevine, Texas. Other famous alumni of the educational establishment include Bruce Channel, Norah Jones and Demi Lovato.
Post became interested in music as a teenager, teaching himself how to play saxophone. He has credited the video game Guitar Hero as his initial instructor for the guitar.
He chose Post Malone as his stage name in his early teens. While Post is his last name, he used a rap name generator to get "Malone."
Malone created his first self-produced mixtape,
Young and After Them Riches, when he was 16 years old using the Audacity digital audio editor. In February 2015, when he was 19, he uploaded a demo of his song "
White Iverson" to his SoundCloud account and watched in disbelief as it went viral. After hitting one million views in less than a month, the track attracted the attention of record labels who bid for his services. He decided to sign with Republic Records.
Post Malone broke the record for the most simultaneous Top 20 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart in the week his sophomore album Beerbongs & Bentleys was released. The Texan rapper/singer landed nine songs in the top 20 of the tally dated May 12, 2018, shattering the previous record of six, which was shared by The Beatles and J. Cole.
He doesn't spend his money like most people. Malone paid well over $1 million on diamond-encrusted dental work, and at least $2 million on extremely rare Magic: The Gathering cards.
Post Malone clocked at least one entry on the Hot 100 every week for a period that lasted nearly 46 months. His run started on the chart dated January 21, 2017, when "
Congratulations" entered at #90. He had at least one song on the tally until "
Circles" dropped off the listing dated November 14, 2020.
A digital native, he's a major influencer with a huge social media presence. This makes him very attractive to brands looking to reach his audience. Post has made deals with Doritos, Crocs, and most famously, Bud Light, his beverage of choice.
He had a daughter in May 2022. He won't reveal her name but says the "DDP" tattoo on his face is her initials.
In a 2023 Esquire interview, he revealed one of his more intriguing hobbies: bladesmithing. Near his Utah home, he built a forge where he can make knives and swords. "There's nothing better than a cold beer, some good music, and just a hot-ass piece of metal and you're f--king whaling on it," he says.
He loves shooting and owns a huge collection of guns. Why? "They're fun, they're practical, and bad s--t happens," he told Rolling Stone.
He lived in Los Angeles from 2014 until 2019, when he moved to a secluded mansion outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. He likes that Utah has lots of open space, is gun-friendly, and doesn't have as many people who ask him for stuff.
Two days before the August 16, 2024 release of his first country album, F-1 Trillion, Post Malone was welcomed into that world with his Grand Ole Opry debut. The Texan superstar shared the stage with country legends Brad Paisley, Vince Gill, and John Michael Montgomery, turning the iconic venue into a star-studded spectacle.
Post Malone is covered in tattoos. His body (and face) art isn't just for show; it's a canvas of his musical inspirations, featuring tributes to legends like George Harrison, John Lennon, and Hank Williams Sr. The common thread? As Malone bluntly puts it, they're all "dead dudes." Each tattoo represents a figure who left a significant mark on him, blending his love of rock, country, and the blues into a personal homage etched in ink.
Cigarettes are one of Post Malone's biggest vices. Speaking on the
Full Send podcast in 2022, he said his personal record was around 80 in a single day, though 40 to 45 is more typical. Post joked that the habit has roughed up his voice but brushed it off by pointing to Johnny Cash: "He smoked his whole life, and he sounded cool."
