Songfacts®:

  • According to Don Tyler in Hit Songs 1900-1955: American Popular Music of the Pre-Rock Era, the words of "Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries" were written by Lew Brown, and the music by Ray Henderson. Some sources credit Buddy G. DeSylva as co-lyricist of this standard from the 1931 show George White's Scandals, in which it was performed by Ethel Merman.

The most popular contemporary recording was made by Rudy Vallee with his Connecticut Yankees. Tyler's observations are that "This song became one of the most famous Depression philosophy songs of the era. It reasons that one need not work and save because all can be gone in an instant."

It was chosen by Variety for its Hit Parade Of Half A Century. The title was also used for a 1990 novel by Anna King. >>
