Songfacts®:

  • This song finds SZA seeking emotional vulnerability and support in a relationship.

Hoping I'll never find out that you're anyone else
'Cause I love you just how you are
And hope you never find out who I really am
'Cause you'll never love me, you'll never love me

SZA is questioning whether she is deserving of her romantic interest's love. She explained that she wrote it "as one of the older versions of me, but not that old, from the new me to the old me."
  • The song contains a spoken-word outro by SZA's grandmother in which she advises the singer not to let anyone push her around and instead stand her ground and ignore them. SZA often uses close family members to give her small pieces of inspiration in her songs. Her mom, for instance, features at the beginning and end of Ctrl, where she delivers monologues about what the concept of control means to her.
  • The music video was directed by Karena Evans, who has shot several of Drake's videos including those for for "God's Plan," "Nice For What" and "I'm Upset."

The clip finds SZA and her love interest Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, on a tropical island. It was released a week or so after SZA made an appearance in the singer/rapper's "This Is America" visual.

"I actually pulled up to set when they were shooting 'Broken Clocks' just to meet her, and we talked about 'Garden,'" Evans told Genius. "I said, 'Look, what are you feeling? Where were you when you wrote this song? What do you want to do?' Because I just always love to hear from the artists, where they were and what they are even thinking before I go off and conceptualize. She said, 'Look, it's called 'Garden.' I want a destination video.' She's like, 'I want to go to Hawaii.'"

"It was really cool working with Donald," she added. "We just had a chat beforehand about what we were going for and what this Adam and Eve moment means. Him and SZA blew me away in their chemistry on screen and how fun they were to work with. We were running around a jungle together. That's the best filming experience for me."
