Songfacts®:

  • Thomas Rhett penned this EDM-influenced song during a writing trip in Malibu with One Direction songwriters Julian Bunetta, Edward Drewett and John Henry Ryan. "I want people to come in from different genres and be like, 'Dang, I never really listened to country music, but this record kind of turns me on in different ways," Rhett told USA Today.
  • Rhett recalled the story of the tune during a media listening event. "This song started [as] just three dudes and a guitar; there was no element of EDM in this song at all, until it got to be about two or three o'clock in the morning, and we all decided that everything was a better idea than it actually was. Somebody - I think Julian [Bunetta], one of my co-producers - built this electronic post-chorus, if you will; the young kids call it a drop. It was what it was, and I never in a million years thought we would cut it."
  • The track features a bass drop, which is popular in EDM music. "It was a song that we didn't even write with the intention of having somewhat of a drop … It started out [as] just three dudes on an acoustic guitar," Rhett recalled to The Boot. "I was writing the song with a bunch of guys from LA; I'd been listening to a bunch of Chainsmokers songs at that point, and was obsessed with that kind of music and the way it made me feel. And I said, 'Can we add something after the chorus in this song?' and that's what they added it. Never in a million years did I think it was ever going to make the record."

"The more I listened to it, I was like, 'Why would I not want a song of mine that makes me feel incredible to be on the record?'" he added. "Because anytime you go to a country music concert, everyone is more than likely playing hip-hop or EDM as their pre-[show music]. And I just got tired of my intro being way cooler than my show. So why not make one of mine that can be my intro that's as cool as my show?"
  • Thomas Rhett released an EDM version of "Leave Right Now" featuring Danish DJ Martin Jensen. The remix was born out of demand from the country star's European fans. "Our fans are everything," Rhett said. "It's unbelievable to be able to continue to release music that inspires me and be embraced by fans not only at home but overseas too."
