Songfacts®:

  • Here, Tom Odell describes making it to the sunny side of the street after a period of depression. A weight has been lifted, there's laughter in the air and he's loving life. "I guess the idea behind this song was from my experience of sadness," said Odell. "After you've been through a really hard time, there are these incredible peaks of euphoria, these moments of almost uncontrollable joy, which you're almost suspicious of."
  • With his new positive mindset, Odell is relishing the simple pleasures again: A bicycle ride, an old black and movie and a warm beer. However, others are concerned about why he's suddenly turned into such a cheery fellow.

My girlfriend looked worried and asked me why
    But I don't know, I don't know, so I didn't reply
  • "Best Day Of My Life" is Odell's first single released as an independent artist after ending his deal with Columbia Records. The freedom he feels may be a reason he's so chipper. "I feel so free, so liberated to be an independent artist. Honestly there's a huge amount of relief in this music, of just getting to do exactly what I want to do," said Odell. "I wanted to not cram in as many hooks as I could, not have the chorus at the front of the song, just create an environment where people can sit with the music and breathe."
  • Tom Odell co-wrote and co-produced "Best Day Of My Life" with Laurie Blundell. A pianist and composer, Blundell studied at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama and holds an honors degree in Piano Performance from Trinity College of Music. He co-wrote 10 of the tracks on Odell's 2021 Monsters album.
  • The Chinese visual artist Manshen Lo directed the animated music video.
