Songfacts®:

  • This was the opening track from American singer-songwriter Tori Amos' ninth studio album, American Doll Posse.
  • Amos is well known for her left-wing politics and in this song, she attacks President George W Bush. However the singer-songwriter later admitted in an interview with the Sunday Times June 14th 2009, that some felt that she had gone too far with this critique. Amos explained: "I was very vocal with the song… I paid a price for that. And yet, I stand by it every step of the way. I got blackballed on some levels. People wouldn't carry the work here and there - it's not good to give names, because they might be coming in on this record and I'm a f---ing hooker, so I have to take what I can get."
  • American Doll Posse was a concept album consisting of five different female characters based on Greek mythology that Amos developed, each representing different aspects of her own personality. The character in this song, Isabel, was based on the Greek goddess of the hunt, Artemis.
  • This ties in with Amos' aim to be more overtly political with her lyrics and encourage young American women to speak their mind about the state of the country during Bush's tenure. "The main message of my new album is: the political is personal," she told interviewer Paul Tingen. "This as opposed to the feminist statement from years ago that the personal is political. I know it has been said that it goes both ways, but we have to turn it around. We have to think like that. I'm now taking on subjects that I could not have been able to take on in my twenties. With Little Earthquakes I took on more personal things. But if you are going to be an American woman in 2007, with a real view on what is going on, you need to be brave, and you need to know that some people won't want to look at it."
