Songfacts®:

  • This song starts off with references to sweaty Velcro, fur and feathers. It's clear that something salacious is going on, but it's not clear what until Type O Negative lead singer Peter Steele starts singing about getting tangled with his girlfriend and his girlfriend's girlfriend.

"The song was actually based on a few true-life experiences which turned out to be quite pleasant," he told The Aquarian. "There are no philosophical implications. It's purely flesh and fantasy."
  • The song's subject matter wasn't surprising to anyone who bought the previous Type O Negative album, Bloody Kisses, which shows two women on the cover in the throes of passion. The "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend" single art also shows two women, but with Peter Steele on top of them.
  • "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend" was the lead single from October Rust, the most accessible Type O Negative album. They started off as a hardcore band but learned they could attract a lot more fans - especially female fans - by softening their musical edges and getting more sensual with their lyrics. That album was a huge breakthrough and landed them tours with the likes of Mötley Crüe and Danzig. Peter Steele, 6' 8" with lustrous hair, was named one of the sexiest rock stars by Playgirl magazine in 1995 and posed naked for the publication. He also appeared on The Jerry Springer Show in an episode about groupies.

By 1997, Type O Negative was a headliner at Ozzfest, but Steele developed a drug habit. Between his addictions and his mental health issues, he struggled over the next few years, but released three more moderately successful albums with the band. In 2010, he died of heart failure at age 48.
  • The music video, directed by Jon Reiss, makes it pretty clear what the song is about, showing two lovely ladies enjoying each other's company in a car and on a bed. Reiss also directed the Type O video for "Christian Woman."
