Songfacts®:

  • According to Eileen Southern in the Second Edition of her book The Music Of Black Americans: A History, the first piano rag to include the word "rag" in its title was written by the white bandmaster William Krell (1866-1933). The uptempo instrumental was copyrighted January 27, 1897 and published by S. Brainard's Sons of New York. Like many originals from bygone eras it was lost, but reappeared in the 1950s and was recorded by the French jazz pianist Claude Bolling in 1966. >>
