Songfacts®:

  • YG is a LA based rapper, who caught Def Jam's attention after amassing an impressive following in his home city. After signing to the label, he released this first single from his debut album, Fresh on Campus.
  • YG told MTV News the track came together after producer and vocalist Ty Dolla Sign and a few of his homies invited him to the studio to jump on a track they were working on. He explained the song is a take on the old notion of a one-night stand: "The song 'Toot It and Boot It' means have fun for one night," he said. "Go to Vegas, you meet a girl in the club, tell her what's up, take her back to the hotel, and then you do you-know-what, then after you do that, you kick them out. You got to go. You toot it and boot it. You got to give them the boot, and then it's on with your life."
  • The rapper denied to MTV News that the song has misogynistic overtones. "The girls like that song, because they do a lot of tootin' it and bootin' it too, so they feel where I'm coming from," he said.
  • The song is based around a sample of the opening piano from The Association's 1966 track "Songs In the Wind" (albeit slowed down and in a lower pitch).

"That inspiration really came from the night before," Ty Dolla Sign recalled to Rolling Stone. "[DJ] Mustard was at the crib, and we threw a kick-back. Mustard's DJ'ing and he played [sings D4L's 'Scotty']. It was super simple. ... The crib went crazy. So I went back the next day like, 'Let me do that vibe.' That with the sample reminded people of the G-Funk era, and we had the West Coast back."
  • "Toot it" was sampled the following year on Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa and Bruno Mars' hit single "Young, Wild & Free."
